The main difference between a hackney carriage (taxi) vehicle and a private hire vehicle is that hackney carriages are permitted to use designated ranks and can also be hailed down in the street. They are usually identified with a TAXI sign on the roof and a taxi identification licence number plate on the rear of the vehicle issued by “Suffolk Coastal Council” All “Taxi Drivers” wear id badges vehicle issued by “Suffolk Coastal Council”. Do not travel in any vehicle which do display the legally required signage and id.

Private Hire Cabs cannot be hailed down in the street and must be pre-booked via the office or base of a licensed ‘Private Hire Operator'. Private hire vehicles must not have roof signs but are permitted to have stickers and signs. There is no set fare for a private hire vehicle journey, so the fare price should be confirmed at the time of booking. All “Private Hire” vehicles are required to display an identification licence number plate on the rear of the vehicle issued by “Suffolk Coastal Council”. There are a number of illegal unlicensed minicab, minibus and stretched-limo operators in the Ipswich/Felixstowe area offering Private Hire services at cheap rates. The vehicles used are not properly insured, not maintained to PCV standards/VOSA directives and are driven by unqualified drivers. All vehicles seating up to 8 seats are required to be licensed as “Private Hire” vehicle including the driver and are required to display an identification licence number plate on the rear of the vehicle.
All vehicles over 9 seats (including stretched-limos) are required to be licensed as PCV vehicles and must display valid either a blue or green current “PCV Licence” in the windscreen and driven by a driver with a valid vocational PCV entitlement on their driving licence.
