Multi-Ticket Travel ("Make Huge Savings On Rail Travel”)
The fare structure of the “National Rail Network” is inadequately configured even within train operating companies’ areas. To take advantage of this savings can be made on journeys by purchasing more than 1 ticket for the journey being made. “Peak and Off Peak” travel restrictions apply but providing the train you are travelling stop at the station where tickets start or finish there is no need to change trains. It is advised when travelling using “Multi-Tickets” to purchase your tickets in advance but they can be purchased on the day of travel. Any “Walk on Ticket” for any journey can be purchased from any station travel office or from the conductor on the train providing they have the competence to perform the transaction. Many national express (East Anglia) conductors have incompetence knowledge of the “National Rail Network”.

2 Examples of Multi-Ticket Savings from Felixstowe

To Birmingham via Peterborough (Off Peak Return)
Standard Off Peak Return £66.10     "Multi-Ticket” Standard Off Peak Return £49.30
(2 Tickets: Felixstowe to Peterborough – Peterborough to Birmingham)

To Bristol Temple Meads (Day Return Peak)
Standard Anytime Return £203       “Multi-Ticket” Standard Return £70.60
(3 Tickets: Felixstowe to Colchester – Colchester to Didcot – Didcot to Bristol)
 Advanced Tickets
By purchasing up to 3 months in advance savings can be made on rail fares. Nearly all “Advance Tickets” are for single journeys although some train operating companies (Virgin Trains and London Midland Railway) offer advanced “Super Off Peak Returns”. “Advance Ticket” prices vary amongst the train operating companies with some offering better fares and others (national express (East Anglia) are one of the less generous operators). “Advance tickets” can only be used on the date of travel and on the nominated train! If the train is missed, tickets are not valid for travel, the full single fare will apply and in some circumstances the addition of a “Penalty Fare” unless services are severely disrupted with an “Emergency Timetable” in operation. “Advanced Tickets can be purchased at any rail station with a travel office or online, All train operators sell “Advance Tickets” online plus independent ticket agents in which some charge a card fee. From a IBPTS online “Advance Ticket” purchase survey “Virgin Trains” were the most efficient with an easy to navigate website and next day 1st class post delivery guaranteed at no extra charge if book before 15:00. The Trainline and Raileasy were the most inefficient and it is advised to avoid these.

national express (East Anglia) restrict “Advance Tickets” from Felixstowe with very limited fare offers with the average cheapest being £10 to London, A wider choice is available from Ipswich with £9 fare being the average cheapest to London. “

“Advance Tickets” can make beneficial savings on long journeys. Journeys must be planned carefully with sufficient time allowed for connections, late running and delays, as train operating companies will not take into consideration delays or service disruption of other train operating companies! We advise when travelling using “Advance Tickets” that a separate ticket is purchased for each journey to make greater savings; for example Felixstowe to Bristol 2 tickets (Felixstowe to London + London Zone 1 to Bristol) Using “Advance Tickets” this journey can be made “Off Peak” for as little as £15!

 Seat Reservations (Mainline Services)
To reserve a seat in Standard Class, a cost of £2.50 is added to the ticket price. For Season Ticket holders, the cost is £1.00. These costs apply to a single journey. A return journey will cost £5 (£2 for season ticket holders).Seat Reservation is optional with the cost applying to the following ticket types, Standard Anytime/Off Peak, Ranger/Rover (including BritRail) and promotional tickets.
Seat reservation charges do not apply in First Class on national express (East Anglia) services. If travelling First Class, seat reservations can be made free-of-charge. Travelling on an Advance ticket, seat reservation is included with the ticket.
 Penalty Fares (Mainline Services)
national express (East Anglia) operates a Penalty Fares scheme on mainline services. All Penalty Fare Stations are clearly identified by distinct warning signs at each station entrance. At Penalty Fare Stations, if you cannot buy the ticket you require at the station ticket office you must use the self-service ticket machine or ‘Permit to Travel machine. Where a ‘Permit to Travel machine is provided it will be switched on when the ticket office is closed. To obtain your ‘’Permit to Travel’, insert coins up to the value of your fare. You must exchange your ‘Permit’ for a valid ticket at the first opportunity, and pay any difference in fare, either from on-train staff or at a ticket office. The exchange should be made within two hours of buying a ‘Permit’. You must always have a valid ticket or a ‘Permit to Travel’ for your journey before you board a train at a Penalty Fare Station. If you cannot present a valid ticket or ‘Permit’ when requested, you will be liable to pay a Penalty Fare of £20 or twice the appropriate full Single fare to the next station at which the train stops, whichever is the greater. You will then be required to leave the train at that stop or, if you wish to remain on the train, purchase a full Single fare ticket to your destination. On train “Ticket Inspectors and Conductors” do not have any law and detainment enforcement powers, they can only request payment and ask passengers to leave the train. Any physical contact with passenger is categorised as an assault upon the passenger.
